Low-Carb Diabetes Diets Improve Or Reverse Type 2 Diabetes

There may be good news in terms of a diabetic diet that can improve or even reverse high blood sugar symptoms if a Duke University researcher is correct. According to Dr. Eric Westman and colleagues, a very low carb diet improves blood sugar control better than a reduced-calorie low glycemic diet. In a study funded by the Atkins Foundation, Westman’s research focused on an eating plan that included less than 20 grams of carbs per day.

Though the typical Atkins approach uses that level for only the first two weeks, Westman kept participants to less than 20 grams per day for the full six months of the study. The results showed striking improvements in A1C levels, higher weight loss and better HDL levels. Perhaps the most profound impact was that more than 95 percent of the low-carb diet group reduced or eliminated their diabetes treatment drugs.

Levels of LDLs, the bad cholesterol, did increase slightly but not significantly. Westman says it’s worth the small increase in view of the prospect of a natural cure for diabetes. Another expert said such an extreme approach needs more study to make certain that it’s safe over the long term. And it’s not for everyone – more than 40 percent dropped out before the study ended.

Be sure to talk with your physician if you’re thinking of trying this kind of a drastic diabetes nutrition program. And check this link to find a DentistryForDiabeticsSM dentist in your area who knows how to reduce blood sugar with dental treatment that’s customized for people who struggle with diabetes control.
